Toulouse-Lautrec's Paris - A guide book to the sites and landmarks of
the painter's life in the Paris of the "Naughty Nineties".
No artist's work captures the spirit of the Bohemian, Belle
Epoque Paris of the late
19th-century than that of the crippled painter Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec.
Toulouse-Lautrec spent much of his short adult life in the artistic quarters of Paris
- especially around Pigalle and Montmartre..., as well as frequenting the most famous
music halls, theaters, restaurants, bars, circuses and "maisons closes" of the day - including many that
still exist, such as the Moulin Rouge and the Folies Bergères.
Toulouse-Lautrec was a
well-known and much-loved character in late 19th century Paris, albeit controversial
-- with his distinctive hat, cane and
beard - a friend of many of the most famous performers, artists, painters, actors,
impresarios, writers and decadent dandies of the
day: figures such as Vincent Van Gogh, Oscar Wilde, Charles Conder, plus
infamous actresses and Cancan dancers Jane Avril, Yvette Guilbert
